Elder & Deacon/Deaconess Nomination

Nomination Process for Elder or Deacon/Deaconesses

The members of Calvary Church may suggest candidates for the roles of elders and deacons/deaconesses. As you consider suggesting a candidate, please consider the following information.

Selection of Elders and Deacons
Elders and Deacons/Deaconesses must be members of Calvary Church for at least one year. The recommended candidates are initially vetted by the nominating committee. This committee is comprised of several Elders, Deacons, Deaconesses, and members of the congregation at large. This year’s committee includes Matt Holden, Jeff Ibach, Sharon Kliewer, Linda Hershey, Freeman Chakara, Grif Jack, Steve Iseman, and Beau Eckert. They collect and evaluate the names of individuals suggested by members of the congregation and church leadership. After evaluation, interviews and much prayer they make recommendations to the Elder Board for approval. The elders then present a slate of nominees for affirmation by the congregation at the annual church business meeting in September.

Role of Elders
Christ is the head of Calvary Church and His authority is exercised through His Word. The church is governed and led by Elders who are the overseers and shepherds and they serve as the spiritual leaders of the church. Based on Calvary’s understanding of Scripture, this primary leadership role is fill by biblically qualified men. They are leaders responsible to God and each other. They lead and serve collegially. As individuals, they are not representatives of any group within the church.

Role of Deacons/Deaconesses
The Deacons/Deaconesses primary role is one of service. They serve under the direction and oversight of the elder board assisting the Elders and the staff in fulfilling the ministries of the church. Based on our understanding of Scripture, the role of deacon/deaconess is fulfilled by biblically qualified men and women.

Qualifications
Character—“who they are”
Elders - 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9; 1 Peter 5:1-2; Acts 20:17, 28
Deacons/Deaconesses - 1 Timothy 3:8-13; Acts 6:3

We desire leaders who are humbly seeking to grow in conformity to the image of Christ, are gracious truth tellers, and manage relationships well.

Competency—“what they can do”
Elders are to be leaders, individuals who through integrity of character can influence and inspire others to accomplish mission, vision and values that God has set before the church. Deacons/Deaconesses are servants, humbly putting the needs of others ahead of their own. Does the life experiences, gifting, talents, training, etc. contribute well to this person serving as an elder or deacon/deaconess?

Culture—“they support and agree with Calvary’s vision and values”
The elders and deacons/deaconesses of Calvary Church must agree with the doctrinal standards, support the vision and values and understand the history and culture of the church. We want leaders and servants who love Calvary and want to see God’s best for the His church.

Chemistry—“how they fit within the team”
Because the elders and deacons/deaconesses work in collegial collaboration, individual elders and deacons/deaconesses must be able to positively contribute in that context.
